How to track settling floc particles?

From the floc experiment at Caltech, my goal is to track settling velocity, particle diameter, fractal dimension, and primary particle diameter.

First, I track the particle using edge detection.

Next, I calculate the particle velocity by identifying the nearest particle in the subsequent frame.

I use Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) to calculate the background turbulence.

I correct for it to calculate the gravitational settling velocity.
